May. 17th, 2004 09:42 amLast night I took a trip to the cinema with my usual lovely companion for such excursions. We saw Van Helsing. What can I say? I enjoyed it a lot more than Underworld. Mainly because Underworld tried desperately to have a proper plot and failed. Van Helsing on the other hand avoided this problem completely by having absolutely nothing resembling a proper plot. Van Helsing compensated for the lack of any plot by throwing in more gratuitous action sequences than I ever remember seeing in a film. It is a good thing that I don't have much of a purist mentality regarding faithfulness to source material, because this film managed to include Dracula, Dr. Jekyl/ Mr. Hyde and Frankenstein/ Frankenstein's Monster without paying even the slightest regard to the original novels.
Overall, it was quite an enjoyable bit of nonsense for a Sunday night. No brain required, just sit back and go 'ohhh, pretty!' at the special effects.
